The man was not immediately identified and it was not immediately clear why he jumped off Flight 4236 at around 8 a.m. on Saturday after arriving at Sky Harbor International Airport from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"After the man got off the plane, the captain informed the control tower so that local authorities could respond to the situation," Southwest spokesman Dan Landson said in an email. Landson said the plane with the remaining crew and passengers then went to the designated gate.
The fire department chief Todd Killer, a spokesman for the Phoenix fire department, said in an email that the 30-year-old had entered the fire station (phoenix airport man jumps out of plane reddit), entered a dorm room, and locked himself in it.
After a few minutes, firefighters were able to unlock the man to open the door, after which he was examined and treated for a leg injury and taken to hospital, Killer said.
Phoenix police said in an email that they are investigating the incident and did not provide any further details about the incident, including the man's condition.
Sky Harbor spokeswoman Julie Rodriguez said the incident did not slow down airport operations.
An FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) spokesman referred the investigation to local authorities.
